Will Smith has long been an extremely palatable actor.  His work in science fiction films, action films and the occasional drama have all provided him with ample opportunities to show that he is a skilled and charismatic performer.   Smith doesn’t disappoint in his new biographical film, The Pursuit of Happyness.

Smith plays a down on his luck character named Chris Gardener.  The man is stuck in a loveless marriage, in a terrible sales job, and in a low income situation that could come apart at the seams at any moment.  Indeed, everything in his life does come apart.  All that he has left to fight for is his five-year old son (Jaden Smith) and the opportunity to work in a competitive – but no guarantees – internship as a stock-broker.

Will Smith has played a lot of roles where he has done a lot of running. In other films, he’s chased aliens, robots, and robbers.  It appears that director Gabriele Muccino, saw these other films and felt that this was an important part of Smith’s persona.  Throughout The Pursuit of Happyness, Smith’s character must chase everything.  He has to chase a place to live.  He has to chase his internship.  He has to chase his potential clients.  He has to chase lost merchandise.  He has to chase buses, subways, bums and hippies.  Indeed, after all the running that took place in this film, one tends to forget that this is even a drama.  Perhaps if Muccino had focused more on the metaphorical chases than the physical, the film would have felt a bit more satisfying at the end.

The Pursuit of Happyness is based on the autobiographical novel of the same name written by the real-life Chris Gardener.  Due to the fact that the script is based on real events, much of the over-the-top melodrama and the lack of twists and turns in the story can be forgiven. 

Will Smith took this dramatic role and somewhat predictable plot and gave it a real life.  His character’s pain and frustration is projected onto the audience with an ease that is not often seen on screen.  Perhaps some part of this is because Smith is working with his real-life son, Jaden.  The two actors have a great chemistry together and we root for them from the beginning of the film to the end.

Though we know the minute that we sit down in the theater that the film will end on an upbeat note, we are happy to take the journey.  Perhaps the direction could have been tighter and the script could have been cleaner, but that’s not what we’re in the theater for.  We’re in the theatre to see Will Smith.  Why?  Because no matter what the role is, we know that he will deliver.  That’s a lot more than can be said about most actors today.
